ANJA SCHWÖRER

Anja Schwörer‘s art is inspired by the theme of memory. Rememberance is understood as material that can take on the most bizarre and capricious connotations and forms. These forms are impressed on the fabric through the stages of dying, bleaching, knotting, and untying. The bleaching process lies at the core of the woirk, partly due to the printing and photograpic techniques that Schwörer has mastered.

„I think a lot about the idea of the ‚indexical image‘ and how its conception influenced my work.

In the digital age, the model of indexicality is losing its function as a form of documentation. The relation between the image and its picture as cause and effect no longer exists. What is real, what is true, and what is fake. You can’t be sure what factors are real. Facts can be manipulated. Bearing this in mind, how can image-making be authentic and immediate in our times?“

„I don‘t think that everything that happens in my paintings has to be, or even should be, understood. Art is seen from various angles. Everyone observes an image in a different way, since each person possesses an individual knowledge, and has a divergent cultural education and origin. Yet the viewer should have a certain receptivity, an openness and an existential curiosity.“*
